What is mobility management?

Mobility Management

The term “mobility management” has been coined in recent years. Utilizing mobile devices in business has grown increasingly important in order to stay competitive. Along with mobility growth comes great challenges. Here at MobiChord we believe mobility management should be holistic and include every possible aspect of mobility. There are three core areas pertaining to mobility: asset management, expense management and service management.

Wireless Asset Management

Managing the physical wireless devices a business has can be a daunting task. It’s common for large corporations to have tens of thousands of mobile devices. Asset management doesn’t only include corporate-owned devices, but also includes devices employees bring into the corporate plans, this is often referred to as BYOD (bring your own device). Cell phones are no longer the only devices companies deploy. They are now deploying tablet computers with built-in wireless network connectivity as well as wireless air cards and hotspots. Asset management includes the inventory, service and retirement of mobile devices.

EMM/MDM Solutions

EMM stands for enterprise mobility management and MDM stands for mobile device management. In the world of mobility management these two terms are generally synonymous with the exception that MDM is more specific to devices while EMM includes additional services. There are several companies that specialize in EMM and MDM services, these solutions are generally offer services that:

  • Deploy Wireless Assets
  • Aggregate Device Inventories with Assigned Users
  • Manage Applications
  • Secure Wireless Devices
  • Separate Corporate and Personal Data
  • Quarantine Non-compliant Devices
  • Enroll BYOD
  • Upgrade Devices
  • Retire Mobile Assets

Wireless Expense Management

Mobile expense managers have the complex task of managing carrier invoices and mitigating costs. Wireless carriers are deeply concerned with protecting their bottom line and it is the customer’s responsibility to keep them honest. Understanding wireless invoices is the first step to lowering costs. Usage-based expenses related to mobility generally include:

  • Voice
  • Data
  • SMS (Texts)
  • Voice Roaming
  • Data Roaming
  • SMS Roaming (Texts)
  • Long-Distance International Voice
  • Long-Distance International Texts
  • Services
  • Recurring (Plans)
  • Taxes
  • Other
  • Employee stipends

Recurring expenses are the base plans companies negotiate with carriers. These plans offer the best price per unit of use. Excessive charges come from using more than what’s allocated to these plans. These charges are referred to as overage fees. The biggest goals of mobile expense managers should be to:

  1. Avoid overages and usage-based fees by ensuring user’s plan completely cover usage. If a user will be roaming, features should be added to cover additional usage.
  2. Tailor plans to actual usage. This means you shouldn’t pay for what you aren’t using. For example, if a user only consumes 1 GB of data per month, they shouldn’t have a 5 GB data plan.
  3. Eliminate lines, plans, and features without active users.
  4. Negotiate better rates with carriers.

Wireless Service Management

With such large numbers of devices deployed throughout businesses there is great need to service users and their accounts. Within mobility management we find a lifecycle and service is required throughout. This includes the services related asset and expense management as well. Here are services you can often find in a mobility service management catalog:

  • On boarding new users
  • Asset assignment and deployment
  • Change management (Lines, features, devices, plans)
  • Incident management (Lost devices, broken devices, security actions etc.)
  • Expense management
  • Carrier management
  • Asset and account retirement

Mobility management should be holistic and include asset, expense and service management of wireless devices. Proper mobility management in business can help lower mobile expenses, lessen time spent managing mobile devices and users and increase transparency.
